How do I get to the American Embassy? I met Tom in front of the store. I feel more alert after drinking a cup of coffee. I hear that his father is in another country. I hear hes just begun looking for another job. Sure. Im busy with my homework. Hes saving up to go to college. Did you know that theyre from England? Why dont we drop by to see her?
Ao Oni 6.2 English: - I feel guilty.
- I tried to write with my left hand.
- Dont you think youll be lonely?
- Leave me a message, please.
- Have you seen Sara today? I think she might have one.
- May I have a pillow and a blanket, please?
- I have aches and pains all over my body.
- She scolded him for being late.
- There has always been war and there always will be.

- He ran as fast as he could.
Can you hear me now? I always take a bath before going to bed. Actually, would you please hand me my phone? I think I should give her a call now. Shes probably wondering where I am. The room was locked. You look pale today. She met him on the beach. Im feeling fine now. We traveled on foot. I am not always at home on Sundays. He did a cartwheel.

Apple iOS6 Calendaring bug Affecting Exchange and by extension Lotus

Apple iOS6 Calendaring bug Affecting Exchange and by extension Lotus

One of the things that the company I work for (and most others) do on a regular basis is send meeting invites to people at other companies and on various other systems.  Notes meeting handling isnt perfect and weve had trouble with Blackberry and Google calendars in the past, but nothing like the trouble weve had this week.

It seems that when we send a meeting invite out and one of our recipients cancels, they take over the meeting as chair and cancel it for the remaining participants too - even if theyve already accepted.

Its taken us a while to get our head around the problem, particularly as it happened with several different meetings and multiple outside sources.  Naturally, you presume that several systems out there cant be wrong and it must be a problem at our end - even if we havent changed anything.  Right?

Wrong!

As it turns out, the recently released Apple iOS 6 has a flaw which trips up Microsoft Exchange systems not configured according to best practice.  Lotus Notes/Domino handles things a little differently and we end up with two meetings but the net result is the same - embarrassment.

Its been widely reported but in case youve missed it, heres a notice from MacRumors.

For the time being at least, were recommending that our people dont accept or reject meeting notices via phone.  Its something I dont do because I had similar problems with may blackberry/google synch but this is  the first time weve had to issue a company-wide warning.

Hopefully Apple and Microsoft will sort this one out soon.

ANPAO by Jamake Highwater

ANPAO by Jamake Highwater

Friday (April 8, 2016), I used Skype to give a long-distance talk for the Spotlight on Books conference in Minnesota. In the Q&A, I was asked about Jamake Highwaters Anpao. Ive mentioned that book in many talks but have not yet done a stand-alone post here. Yesterdays question prompts me to finally do it.

Anpao came out in 1977. It won a Newbery Honor in 1978. The book was published in one of the many eras in which US society realizes its body of literature is too white.

Anpao was put forth as the work of a Native man, but "Jamake Highwater" was a pen name for a man named Jack Marks. He was not Native but for many years, he was receiving large grants intended for projects developed by Native people, including some by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting

In 1983 Akwesasne Notes published an article by Highwater, in which he talked about being treated as a "second class Indian" because he had mixed heritage. Seeing that article, Hank Adams began meticulous research on him. Adams, Vine Deloria Jr., and Suzan Harjo worked together to get an expose published the following year, in Akwesasne Notes.

Does it matter that Highwater was not Native (he is deceased)? I think it does. In school, teachers often assign Author Studies--in which students are asked to read other items the author has done, study the works individually and as a whole, and see what sort of observations they may make in changes in an authors work over time. In most of the items I see about "Jamake Highwater," I dont see anything (in materials for children/teens) that includes the fact that he was not Native. They take his writing, then, as the writing of a Native person.

That leads me to Anpao as a work of literature. Can it be used to teach children or young adults about Native people?

My answer: no.

In the authors note, Marks/Highwater tells us that the character, Anpao, is a "central Indian hero" created by him from stories from Plains and Southwest peoples. Im from one of those nations of the southwest. In one way after another, were different from the Plains peoples. Just what did Marks/Highwater do to create this character? What did he take from the Plains, versus the Southwest peoples to make this "central Indian hero"?

As he travels, Anpao tells stories. But as he tells them, they are presented as if they belong to Anpao, this "central Indian hero." Everything, if we go along with the story, belongs to, and/or comes from, Anpao, the "central Indian hero." That, ironically, is precisely what the author did in creating this "Jamake Highwater" identity. He took from others, and called what he took, his own. That appropriation is a pattern in his work.

In Native American Representations, First Encounters, Distorted Images, and Literary Appropriations (Bataille, 2001), Kathryn Shanley (a professor in Native American Studies at the University of Montana) analyzed one of his other books (The Primal Mind), and writes that Highwater (p. 38):
"felt he could take license with archived materials and claim the experiences contained in them as if they originate from his own personal knowledge and insight."
Shanley goes on to discuss that so many were duped by Highwater because he spoke in ways that met their expectations of what and how a Native person would be. In that expectation--driven by stereotypical and romantic ideas of who we are--Native people who do not speak in that way are seen as "not Indian." Anpao was published in 1977, but now--39 years later--Native writers are still faced with that sort of rejection of their work.

That is the status quo! Books with mystical Indians--like the grandmother in Emily Henrys The Love That Split the World--are scooped up by major publishers.

That has to change. Everyone in childrens literature has a responsibility to work towards that change. In the Summer 2015 issue of Children and Librarians, Kathleen T. Horning included Highwaters fraud in her article, "Milestones for Diversity in Literature and Library Services." I hope you do your part.

App Submissions On Google Play Now Reviewed By Staff Will Include Age Based Ratings

App Submissions On Google Play Now Reviewed By Staff Will Include Age Based Ratings

Google Play, Googles marketplace for Android applications which now reaches a billion people in over 190 countries, has historically differentiated itself from rival Apple by allowing developers to immediately publish their mobile applications without a lengthy review process. However, Google has today disclosed that, beginning a couple of months ago, it began having an internal team of reviewers analyze apps for policy violations prior to publication. And going forward, human reviewers will continue to go hands-on with apps before they go live on Google Play.
Additionally, Google announced the rollout of a new age-based ratings system for games and apps on Google Play, which will utilize the scales provided by a given regions official ratings authority, like the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) here in the U.S.
According to Purnima Kochikar, Director of Business Development for Google Play, Google has been working to implement the new app review system for over half a year. The idea, she says, was to figure out a way to catch policy offenders earlier in the process, without adding friction and delays to the app publishing process. To that end, Google has been successful, it seems the new system actually went live a couple of months ago, and there have been no complaints. Today, Android apps are approved in hours, not days, despite the addition of human reviewers.
We started reviewing all apps and games before theyre published its rolled out 100%, says Kochikcar. And developers havent noticed the change.
Google Play New Content Ratings Image
The reason why Googles app review team is able to process app submissions so quickly is because the system also includes an automated element. Before app reviewers are presented with the applications, Google uses software to pre-analyze the app for things like viruses and malware as well as other content violations. For example, its image analysis systems are capable of automatically detecting apps that include sexual content, as well as those that infringe on other applications copyright.
Google didnt want to get into the specifics of what its capable of in terms of automation, but notes that it can identify a number of violations beyond just the inclusion of malware.
Were constantly trying to figure out how machines can learn more, explains Kochikar. So whatever the machines can catch today, the machines do. And whatever we need humans to weigh in on, humans do.
Though Google uses more machine-aided processes in reviewing applications than Apple does currently, Kochikar admits that with regard to its human element, Googles system may not be as robust as those from rivals. That is, Google is trying to balance being able to catch the violations earlier without impacting the time it takes to get an app published to its Android app marketplace.
The new system also means that developers will now be able to see their apps publication status in more detail, and learn quickly if and why an app has been rejected or suspended, says Google. In the Developer Console, app creators will see their apps latest publishing status, allowing them to easily fix problems and resubmit apps after correcting minor violations.

New Age-Based Ratings

In addition, Google also announced another far-reaching change which will affect all Google Play developers worldwide: the addition of an age-based ratings system for apps and games. Starting in May, developers will have to complete a content questionnaire about their app ahead of submission, which has been designed to help identify objectionable content and return the most appropriate rating.
IARC ratings@2x
Because rating systems vary by region, Google has worked on this implementation with the help of the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) and its participating bodies, including the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), Pan-European Game Information (PEGI), Australian Classification Board, Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK) and Classificao Indicativa (ClassInd). Those regions that dont have a specific ratings authority in place will include a more generic rating, notes Google.
That means that, in the U.S., Google Play games will feature the same ratings as youd otherwise find on boxed software, like Everyone (E), Teen (T), Mature (M), etc. Other countries ratings will reflect those used by their own local organizations or regulatory bodies. And Google Plays parental controls feature will be updated to allow blocking of these new rating categories.
Before today, app ratings on Google were somewhat problematic because developers were able to assign them by themselves. With the new age-based ratings, however, developers cant override the rating without going back and taking the questionnaire again and editing their answers. Plus, Google says that it will review the ratings being produced by the new process, too, to make sure developers arent trying to lie on the questionnaire in order to adjust their app or games rating.
Initially, there will be a grace period while the new system is rolled out, but by the end of next month, it will become a blocking requirement for new app submissions and updates. Those apps that remain unrated may then be blocked in certain territories or for specific users, notes Google.
