According to AppleInsider Apple is currently engaged in talks to acquire German TV maker Loewe. Loewe usually creates minimalistic TV sets that work work well with the designs usually created by Jonathan Ive. AppleInsider states that Apple offered 87.3 million euros (almost $113 million) which is more than Loewes market cap of little under 60 million euros. Loewe currently has about 1,000 employees but generated a loss of 10.5 million euros last year. Loewe has also been working on high end AirSpeakers to work with Apples wireless AirPlay technology.

Apple unveiled a new iPad on Wednesday with a higher resolution display and faster 4G LTE connectivity as it seeks to tighten its grip on the booming tablet computer market.
The California-based gadget-maker also released an updated version of the Apple TV box used to stream movies, television shows and other content from the Internet to high-definition TV sets.
The new iPad screen features 264 pixels per inch, providing the best display ever on a mobile device, Apple executives said during a product presentation in San Francisco broadcast live to reporters in London.
"Images on it look stunning," Apple chief executive Tim Cook said of the sharper resolution known as retina display.
Wednesdays press event was the first major product release by Apple since the death of legendary founder and beloved pitchman Steve Jobs.
The Apple co-founder and mind behind the wildly popular iPod, iPad and iPhone devices died in October after battling pancreatic cancer.
The new iPad -- the third version of the touchscreen tablet computer introduced in April 2010 -- also features a five-megapixel camera, a faster processor and high-definition video recording.
It will go on sale on March 16 in Canada, France, Germany and the United States at the same price as the previous models, which start at $499 for the most basic iPad featuring wireless connectivity only.
An iPad with 16 gigabytes of memory and with both Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity will cost $629 while a 32GB Wi-Fi/4G model will cost $729 and a 64GB version with Wi-Fi and 4G will cost $829.
"Apple has its feet firmly planted in the post-PC world," Cook said, adding that "the iPad is reinventing personal computing" and spearheading the post-PC revolution.
Apple sold 15.4 million iPads last quarter.
The new Apple TV box, which Apple said features a streamlined new user interface, will sell for the same $99 price as the previous model.
Apple released the first version of Apple TV in 2007 but it has never really caught on with the public.
Apple has dominated the tablet market since launching the iPad two years ago and few expect that to change anytime soon.
IMS Research said Wednesday that Apple is expected to increase its tablet market share to 70 percent in 2012 from 62 percent in 2011 and it will ship 70 million iPads this year, up 71 percent over the previous year.
"There is a large customer base loyal to Apple products that have been waiting for the latest tablet," IMS Research PC market analyst Gerry Xu said. "Many owners of the iPad 1 are also expected to upgrade to the latest release.
"To date there is no significant threat to the iPads continued dominance in the tablet market," Xu said. "In fact, the share of Android tablets is forecast to fall from 35 percent in 2011 to 26 percent in 2012."
"There are great Android tablets on the market from a hardware perspective but they dont sell worth a damn because they dont have the ecosystem that Apple has," Gartner analyst Van Baker said, referring to the cornucopia of applications, services and content such as music and films available for Apple gadgets.
"Apple is in such good shape already in the tablet space that they dont need to do anything Earth-shattering to maintain momentum," Baker said.

We were expecting Apple to release a new app for Apple TV at its "Hello Again" event, and that was the first thing that the tech giant showed off.
 
Called simply TV, the new app lets you discover and watch TV shows and movies from multiple apps on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad. There�s also a new Siri feature for Apple TV that lets viewers quickly tune in to live news and sporting events.
 
Siri is aware of where sports events and news are being shown, and users can simply say things like, "Watch the Stanford game", "Which football games are on right now?" or "Watch CBS News" (all Apples own examples) and Siri will switch to the relevant live broadcast.
 
"Using apps on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad has become the primary way for so many of us to watch television", said Eddy Cue, Apple�s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. "The TV app shows you what to watch next and easily discover TV shows and movies from many apps in a single place".
 

 

Apple showed off the following key features:

• Watch Now: Watch Now is where viewers will see their collection of available shows and movies from iTunes and apps. From Watch Now, viewers can then go to Up Next or Recommended to choose what to watch.
• Up Next: Users can enjoy the shows and movies they are currently watching, including recent iTunes rentals and purchases -- all presented in the order they are most likely to watch first. For example, when viewers finish an episode, the next one will automatically appear at the start of the Up Next queue, as will any new episodes as they become available. At any time, users can simply ask Siri to continue watching a show and immediately pick up where they left off.
• Recommended: Viewers can explore a great selection of curated and trending shows and movies, including collections handpicked by Apple�s curators, and dedicated categories and genres such as kids, sci-fi and comedy.
• Library: Viewers can access their entire collection of iTunes movies and TV shows that they have rented or purchased on iTunes.
• Store: If users are looking for something new, they can check out the Store to discover great new content across video services that they have not yet downloaded or are not yet subscribed to, along with the latest releases on iTunes.
• The TV app will allow users to begin watching on one device and pick up where they left off on another.

 

In addition to the new TV app, customers in the US will have a simplified way of enjoying their pay-TV video apps by using single sign-on. Starting in December, subscribers to DIRECTV, DISH Network and others will be able to sign in once on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad to access apps that are part of their pay-TV subscription.
 
The TV app and single sign-on will be available in December as free software updates for Apple TV (4th generation), iPhone and iPad customers in the US. Live tune-in with Siri is available today.

Apple has been granted a patent for an Apple TV remote with inbuilt Touch ID sensor, allowing users to use their biometric data to enter TV passwords, created personalised profiles or controlling connected devices.

The patent, filed in January 2014, explores how biometric information collected through fingerprint sensors could be harnessed to personalise user profiles and acess accounts without the need for annoying and/or burdensome logins.

Data could also be supplied through retinal or facila images, palm, toe or hand prints, voice samples and gesture patterns, according to the filing.

Apple introduced Touch ID fingerprint scanning with the iPhone 5s, which used a fingerprint scanner implemented into the circular home button to unlock the phone and make iTunes purchases through identity verification. The technology has since been extended to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3. More recently Touch ID has been utilised to verify purchases made through Apple Pay, including TfL journeys.

The company recently announced that Apple TV would serve as a hub for HomeKit-enabled devices, Apples platform for connected products. Integrating a Touch ID sensor into a remote would make switching between user profiles a swifter process than inputting login details manually, and allow only certain users to access content, such as 18-rated films or similar.

Biometric identification could also lead to suggested videos, songs, films, TV shows and adverts based on prior watching habits of the user. The TV could, the filing states, configure itself to address users individually, such as "Hello Fred, shall we set me up for you?"

Apple TV was launched in 2007, and is now in its third generation. The company is rumoured to be launching its own online TV service, in association with US broadcasters including ABC, CBS and Fox. Apple struck a deal with HBO to secure early streaming access for the latest series ofGame of Thrones back in March.
