Apple lifts lid on new MacBook thats 24 thinner than MacBook Air

After all of the waiting, Apple has finally unveiled a successor to the MacBook Air -- and it comes with a high resolution Retina-grade display.
Apples SVP of Global Marketing Phil Schiller described the new machine as the "most efficient notebook ever created". The 12-inch machine weighs two pounds and measures 13.1mm thick, compared to the 17.3mm MacBook Air a difference of 24%.
The Retina MacBook Air has a Retina display with a pixel-resolution of 2,304 x 1,440 pixels. Its panel measures 0.8mm thick, making it the thinnest display built into a Mac, according to Apple. Its the first fanless MacBook that arrives fanless and operates silently thanks to Intels Core M CPU inside.
The new MacBooks keyboard uses a butterfly mechanism built of a single assembly and dome switch that is Apple says is four times more precise than the scissor mechanism on the previous MacBook Air, allowing for more precise typing.
It uses a USB type-C connector, which uses a cable a third the size of a standard USB cable. The cable is reversible and provides power, HDMI, USB, DisplayPort and VGA in one connection.
Apple has created the MacBooks battery in sheets that fits the contours of its enclosure, allowing for 35% more capacity in the same amount of space, Schiller noted, and provides nine hours of wireless web use.
The trackpad, which apple calls the Force Touch Trackpad, uses Force sensors and employs what apple calls a Taptic Engine to provide feedback when clicking, and allows you to adjust click feel through software.
It will start at $1,299 the the base model that comes with Intel HD Graphics 5300, 8GB of memory and a 256GB SSD from April 10.
Apple launched the MacBook Air in 2008. It has been one of the companys last devices to get a Retina display after the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, MacBook Pro with Retina and iMac.

Apple is making more money than ever but uncertainty over Watch sales has Wall St worried

Apple is making more money than ever but uncertainty over Watch sales has Wall St worried

ANALYSTS have been led to believe that Apples smartwatch was a sales flop after the company left details out of its financial figures.
While not releasing specific figures for the Apple Watch, Apple reported total results for several products, including the watch, that suggest sales were lower than many Wall St analysts expected. The company also issued a revenue forecast for the current quarter that suggested sales could fall below analysts prior estimates.

Apples latest financial report shows the iPhone is still the key engine of the companys success. The California tech giant said it sold more than 47.5 million iPhones during the three months ending in June, or 35 per cent more than a year ago.
But top executives stood by their decision not to disclose results for the Apple Watch, saying the information could be used by competitors. Many analysts and investors see the watch as an important indicator of the companys ability to produce successful new products.
In one tantalising clue, Apple reported $2.6 billion in revenue from the segment that includes the watch and several other products, or about $952 million more than the previous quarter, when the watch had not yet gone on sale.
If we were to guess that the $952 million was from Watch sales, it would mean that Apple sold at most roughly 3 million of its latest device, assuming all sold were the cheapest model. Significantly less than the iPhone.
Its also half the $1.8 billion in watch sales that analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting.
Apples stock fell nearly 6 per cent, indicating investors werent satisfied with the report.

Apple chief financial officer Luca Maestri told the Associated Pressthat revenue from the watch amounted to well over that $952 million increase. He said the category also includes revenue from iPods and accessories, whose sales fell in the quarter.
We beat our internal expectations for the watch, Maestri said, adding that the number of watches sold in the first nine weeks was greater than the number of iPhones or iPads that the company sold in a comparable period after those products launched.
Apple has previously said it sold 1 million iPhones in the first 74 days, or more than 10 weeks, after sales began in 2007, however that was only in the USA. Apple has said it sold 2 million iPads in the first 60 days, with iPad sales hitting 3 million in 80 days after the iPad was launched in 2010.
Meanwhile, analysts and investors were eager to learn more about the Apple Watch, which went on sale in April. While not expected to be an important revenue source now, the watch has symbolic importance as the first new product category that Apple has launched since the 2011 death of founder and iconic chief executive officer Steve Jobs.
When you look at the next big wave of innovation, in coming years, its not going to come from smartphones, said analyst Angelo Zino of S&P Capital Markets, who said phones were already becoming commodity items, even with Apple dominating the high end of that market. So a lot of people want to see if Apple can roll out a new product thats very successful and innovative.

While Apple executives say demand for the watch has been strong, the absence of official numbers has left analysts to offer estimates ranging from rosy to lacklustre. Maestri acknowledged that Apple has released detailed sales figures for other products, but he said the company wanted to be careful with information about the watch, to avoid tipping competitors as Apple learns more about consumer demand for a new product.
One of the big problems at the moment facing the Apple Watch is a classic catch-22 case. Big app developers like Facebook are being increasingly cautious in developing apps for the new platform, leaving big Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp holes in the Watch ecosystem. Similarly, Google has shown a lack of support for its big apps like Gmail and Maps due to a lack of users on the platform.
But the problem here is, people arent buying the Watch because it doesnt have any big features or killer apps that consumers think are worth dropping big dollars for.

Applying for more than one project in GSoC

Applying for more than one project in GSoC

Many of the students have asked in public forums and in person whether it is a good idea to apply for multiple projects in the Google Summer of Code (GSoC). While quality is better than quantity, if you can manage - why not? go ahead - you may submit up to 5 proposals. Anyway, you will be allowed to work with only of the projects for the Google Summer of Code each year, even if multiple organizations may have chosen you.

As summarized by Stephanie, GSoC administrator: "If multiple organizations decide they want a student, the organization that selects the student first will have the opportunity to keep the student. The 2nd org wanting the student can contact the first organization and ask if they will release the student and the first org can make the decision to keep the student for their org or to release the student so another org can have the student."

In practice, the organization mentors often tend to ask the student her/his opinion. It is always important to be online and available for such communications, especially during these de-duplication time frames. When a student was chosen by two organizations, the second organization may (and often, will) be in a better position to get the student, if they have the word from the student that they are the students preferred organization.

Many factors will influence the decision making process from the first organization, including,
1. Indication from the student which is the most preferred project.
2. The availability of other good students for the same project. If there are more candidates good enough, they may decide to lose this student and get the next one.

As a student, you may also indicate to your potential mentors that you have applied to multiple projects, and this particular one is the most preferred. This will definitely help, if you are applying for multiple projects from the same organization, as the organization mentors can always communicate internally to find the best-fit among projects and students. It will be still useful in negotiations/discussions among the organizations, if the student was chosen by two (or more) different organizations. It always worked for me as a student. So probably will work for you as well.

However, this is just my own experience as a mentor and a student.

annoying lack of attention to detail at other than Apple

annoying lack of attention to detail at other than Apple

It is really annoying when companies I like cant live up to the attention to detail that is exemplified by Apple. Case in point: BlackBerrys comparison tables. Look at the difference in the way that the dimensions are displayed. OK. This is utterly insignificant and more than merely bordering on obsessive-compulsive. Guilty. But I just cant imagine Apple allowing these little errors to occur on their site.
