Apple renames OS X to macOS upcoming Sierra version will get Siri Apple Pay and more

Apple renames OS X to macOS upcoming Sierra version will get Siri Apple Pay and more

If you are wanting a desktop operating system, you largely have two options -- Windows or OS X. To a lesser extent, consumers can opt for Linux-based operating systems, such as Chrome OS or Ubuntu, but Apple and Microsofts offerings reign supreme. While OS X is arguably more elegant than Windows, it only comes installed on Apples expensive hardware. Microsofts OS is the best option for those on a budget.

One thing that was not elegant about OS X, however, was the name. It was not in line with the companys other operating systems -- iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Not to mention, the 15 year old "X" branding was getting a bit long in the tooth. Today, Apple renames it to macOS, while also designating a new code name to the upcoming version -- Sierra. It looks to be the best Mac operating system ever.

"Siri on the Mac is now just one click away. The familiar features of Siri are now on the Mac with brand-new capabilities specifically designed for the desktop. Easily accessible from the Dock, menu bar or keyboard, Siri lets you use your voice to search for information, find files and send messages. For example you can ask Siri to locate a specific document you worked on last night, add a meeting to your calendar or start a FaceTime call. With Siri on the Mac, you can also drag and drop items from Siri search results into your documents or emails, pin Siri search results in Notification Center to keep an eye on information like sports scores or stock prices, and even adjust system preferences, set reminders and search your Photos library", says Apple.

Duing the event, I was quite impressed with the demo of Siri on macOS. She is deeply integrated with finder, offering high-quality contextual search. The voice assistant doesnt just fetch the weather, but it finds your documents too. Taking things a step further, the drag-and-drop functionality worked wonderfully, allowing seamless workflow in the operating system.

The other big feature is Apple pay on the web. The company explains, "users love to shop online using their Macs and with macOS the shopping experience in Safari is now even better. Apple Pay on the web makes it easy to make secure and private purchases when shopping on participating websites. You no longer need to share credit or debit card numbers with an online merchant and actual card numbers are not stored on your device, nor on Apple servers. Just look for the Apple Pay button at checkout on many of your favorite shopping sites and complete your purchase with Touch ID on your iPhone or by using your Apple Watch. Strong encryption protects all communication between your devices and Apple Pay servers, and Apple Pay does not track your purchases".

Strangely, rather than highlight biometrics on the Mac, Apple wants you to verify transactions using your iPhone or Apple Watch. I hope this will change with future hardware -- the company is probably not be ready to discuss features of future computers. With that said, if upcoming Mac computers lack fingerprint readers, it will be a huge blunder. Not every Mac user owns other Apple hardware, and if they do, they may not always have it with them. Maybe Apple just wants to keep Apple users buying multiple devices.

Another great feature is the ability to automatically offload local documents to the cloud to conserve space with "Optimized Storage". This will allow those with smaller storage drives to have more breathing room. On paper it sounds like a great idea, but as more and more folks surf the web on metered connections and jetpacks with limited data, this could end up being a costly headache. Not to mention, increased iCloud Drive storage is yet another monthly cost for users that utilize the functionality.

The operating system is full of other features too, like universal copy and paste, allowing you to share a clipboard between iOS and macOS. Plus, the ability to use "picture in picture" to conveniently watch a video while multitasking. The company has even enabled program tabs on the OS level so any app can be easily managed without any work from the developer.

All in all, this is shaping up to be the best Mac operating system ever. Developers can download the preview today, while existing OS X end users can upgrade when macOS becomes available in the fall. More daring home users can grab the public beta in July.

Are you excited for macOS Sierra? Tell me in the comments.

Announcing intalg integer and number theory algorithms in pure Python 2 x

Announcing intalg integer and number theory algorithms in pure Python 2 x

This is the initial release announcement for pybasealgo (fast implementation of basic algorithms in pure Python 2.x, minimum version:) and the first set of algorithms, intalg (integer and number theory algorithms). The algorithm implementations can be used in Project Euler and programming contest problem solving. These are free software under the GPL. Click on the links above to download the source.

intalg contains the following algorithms:

  • integer bit count (bit_count)
  • square root rounding down (sqrt_floor)
  • kth root rounding down (root_floor)
  • bounded prime list builder using the sieve of Eratosthenes (primes_upto, first_primes_moremem, first_primes)
  • bounded prime generator using the sieve of Eratosthenes (yield_primes_upto, yield_first_primes)
  • unbounded prime generator using the sieve of Eratosthenes (yield_primes, yield_composites)
  • high precision upper bound for natural and base 2 logarithms (log2_256_more, log_more)
  • greatest common divisor using Euclidean algorithm (gcd)
  • primality test using the Rabin-Miller test with fast parameters (is_prime)
  • finding the next prime (next_prime)
  • computation of binary coefficients (choose)
  • integer factorization to prime divisors (factorize, yield_slow_factorize, finder_slow_factorize)
  • computation of the number of divisors (divisor_count)
  • computation of the sum of divisors (divisor_sum)
  • random number generation using the Mersenne twister MT19937, without using floating point numbers (MiniIntRandom)
  • Pollards Rho algorithm aiding integer factorization (pollard)
  • Brents algorithm aiding integer factorization (pollard)
  • simplification of fractions (simplify_nonneg)
  • RLE: run-length encoding (rle)
  • conversion of fraction of very large integers to float (fraction_to_float)

Design principles:

  • Pure Python: Provides full functionality using only built-in Python modules.
  • Fast: Fast implementations of fast algorithms, e.g. Newton iteration for square root and kth root, sieve of Eratosthenes for prime number generation, Brents algorithm for integer factorization. Typically faster than most of the sample code and other libraries found online. (If you find something faster, please let me know by posting a comment.) Not as fast as C code (e.g. pygmp).
  • Correct: Many Python code examples (e.g. Brents algorithm) found on the net are buggy (especially in corner cases) or are too slow. pybasealgo strives to be correct. Production use (i.e. I use this library for solving Project Euler problems) and unit tests help this.
  • Simple: Maintains a balance between speed and implementation simplicity. It implements sophisticated and fast algorithms in a simple way, but it doesnt contain the fastest possible algorithm if its very complex (e.g. for integer factorization, pyecm is 1472 lines long, our intalg contains Brents algorithm, which is slower but much simpler).
  • No-float: Doesnt use floating point numbers, not even for temporary computations (e.g. math.log(...)). This is to avoid rounding errors, which make the correctness of an algorithm hard to prove and they make some computations nondeterministic on some architectures and systems. And also to support arbitrarily large numbers: floats have a maximum (e.g. all IEEE 754 64-bit are less than 2e308), so they cannot be used in calculations with very large numbers. Python uses temporary floating point numbers for random integer generation, so pybasealgo provides an integer-only replacement.
  • Arbitrarily large integers: All algorithms work with small integers (of type int) and arbitrarily large integers (of type long). There is no automatic truncation of the results.
  • Deterministic: Every function returns the same value for the same input, and it runs at the same speed. (Except if some return values are cached in memory, then subsequent calls in the same process will be faster.) This makes debugging and benchmarking a lot easier. Determinism is very important in a programming contest situation: if your program succeeds for you, you dont want it to fail or time out when the judges rerun it. Even those algorithms which use random numbers (e.g. Pollards Rho algorithm and Brents algorithm for integer factorization) are deterministic by default, because they use pseudorandom numbers with a seed which depends only on the input.

Have fun programming and Python and I wish you great success in Project Euler and in programming contests.

At WWDC 2014 Apple come with new version of Mac OS X. Which version of Mac OS X named Yosemite. Apple took that name from "Yosemite" park in California.
This version come with new features. Changed design, added gadgets function, new smart search, fast Safari browser, iCloud Drive and messages new settings. And now we talk about this all new things.

Design of this new version is more similar to iOS 7 system interface.

You can add a widgets in Notification Center. Which make more easy to do some things.

In this version you can see new search settings, Now search bar will be placed at center of your screen. Which search now whole web, and we can say smart search.

New fast Safari browser. More easy to surf the web and save bookmarks. The fast browser now. Chrome go to number two.

And new features in Mail. Now you can send up to 5 GB files. Before that was not possible thing, but now its possible with OS X Yosemite.
And you can now send SMS and MMS with iMessage directly from computer.

Handoff is one of the new features of Yosemite. Handoff allows you to quickly pick-up where you left of on any device. For example, if youre viewing a web page on Safari on your Mac, you can open that same page on your iPad simply be swiping up on the lockscreen.

And at last. You can View and accept calls from your iPhone on your Mac.

Apple Launches Swift Programming Language for Writing OS X and iOS Apps

Apple Launches Swift Programming Language for Writing OS X and iOS Apps

At WWDC 2014 Apple come with new iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite operating systems. But thats not all. Apple really surprised us by launching new Swift Programming Language. Swift seems to be poised to replace Objective-C as the main programming language on Apples platforms. This programming language will use the same LLVM compiler and runtime as Apples Objective-C implementation.

Some of the highlights of the language according to Apple

  • Generics
  • Structs that support methods, extensions, protocols.
  • Tuples and multiple return values
  • Closures (similar to blocks in C and Objective-C) unified with function pointers
  • Fast and concise iteration over a range or collection
  • Functional programming patterns, e.g.: map and filter

If you are a developer then you can download this Book and read about that programming language.
