The current application layer protocols are divided to three categories:

• 802.11p

1. BaseWaveApplLayer
2. TestWaveApplLayer 

• Traci

1. TraCIDemo 

It was designed to send one broadcast packet and after sending one packet one parameter, sent message, will be true and the application protocol can no longer send any packet. 

2. TraCIDemo11p
   

• Others
  

1. BurstApplLayer 
   

It works like TraCIDemo but with this difference, that it send a burst of packets instead of just one packet. After receiving each broadcast packet, it replies an ACK packet if it finds "burstreply" true.

2. SensorApplLayer *
3. TestApplication *
4. TrafficGen

A module to generate a certain rate of broadcast traffic. 

It generates a certain rate of traffic. It uses three parameters for this purpose as follows: packet time/packet per packet time/burst size. This protocol also sends broadcast packets like BurstApplLayer. 

       TestApplLayer 

It was designed to send one broadcast packet and after receiving each broadcast packet, it replies an ACK packet.

After getting a few comments on my post about NCDU Ive decided Im going to start doing a few posts a month with the topic of "Application Spotlight". Basically I am going to feature applications I use on my Linux desktop every week that I feel havent seen enough attention in the FOSS world to date.

Today I would like to talk about a light weight clip board manager called:

Parcellite 

- We all have our favorite celebrities. Get high quality posters of yours at IDPoster. -

A clipboard manager is one of those small things I have that make using my Linux desktop more enjoyable (it is also one of the things I miss the most when sitting down in front of someone elses computer). A clipboard manager essentially just saves the last couple of dozen lines you have saved with ctrl+c:

If you cant think of any situations in which a tool like this is useful I ask you to simply use it for a few days and you will find a few. I like parcellite because in addition to being stable it is also light weight, its installation leaves a fairly minimal footprint (just a few GTK things).

All in all I believe Parcellite is an excellent piece of software. It is almost always one of the first things I install while setting up a newly installed Linux distro. Give it a try and let me know what you think of it.

Application Caffeine for pleasure of uninterrupted viewing

How often have you felt irritated by intruding screen-saver or your computer going into power saving mode while you are watching your favorite movie or series. I for one find this very irritating, annoying and I had in fact disabled power saving and screen saver from my computer.

This is not a very good solution, disabling power saving mode is not wise,as you waste a lot of energy and consequently this degrades the battery life of your laptop,in case you are using laptop. Caffeine is a small applet that comes handy in this situation, it allows you to disable Screen Savers and Power Saving mode temporarily while you enjoy video or any other activity which might have resulted in computer going into power saving mode.

To install Caffeine, open the terminal window from ( Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and issue the following command to add repository for caffeine and subsequently install caffeine on your system. ( These instructions are meant for Ubuntu 10.10 and earlier versions)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:caffeine-developers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install caffeine

Once, you install caffeine you can launch Caffeine from ( Applications -> Accessories -> Caffeine), caffeine would sit in panel around the date and time.

Caffeine in the panel above, preferences loads up different options -

In preferences you can decide if you want to launch caffeine as soon as you log in, further you can configure option to launch caffeine automatically when you run certain program for instance you can add all your different media players, allowing caffeine to launch automatically whenever you play video files or for instance you can configure caffeine to launch when you play flash files.

In short, caffeine is a short and simple tool that allows you to have hours of uninterrupted viewing of your favorite media files and yet keep all your power saving and screen saver settings unharmed, a very useful addition to your Desktop Linux arsenal.

Gnome-do seems to be the best application launcher. Theres also kupfer but I didnt like it.
Q: how to make GD find my custom applications?
A: GD finds the *.desktop files stored in so called XDG dirs (info). But briefly: create a *.desktop file (simple text file) for your launcher and put it into $XDG_DATA_HOME ( $HOME/.local/share if the variable is not set)

Q: where is Gnome-do preferences?
A: pop up GD, click a small arrow in top-right corner.

Q: Gnome-do doesnt show some of the desktop files, but Im sure they are present in proper dirs.
A: check if the desktop file has NoDisplay=true. If it does - remove it. Can be caused by hiding an application launcher in main menu editor.

Q: How to calculate with GD? Gcalculate plugin is not working.
A: No solution so far. If you absolutely need it - use kupfer instead of GD

Comme son nom l�indique, McAfeeSocial Protection est un syst�me de protection qui permet aux utilisateurs du r�seau social de s�curiser leurs photos en emp�chant les autres utilisateurs de les partager. En effet, actuellement sur Facebook, vous avez le choix de restreindre la visibilit� d�une photo : vous pouvez la rendre publique, la montrer � tous vos amis, � tous vos amis d�amis, ou bien � tous vos amis sauf leurs connaissances. Vous pouvez aussi personnaliser la visibilit� en indiquant les noms des personnes qui ne pourront pas avoir acc�s aux photos. Une fois votre d�cision prise, les personnes autoris�es � voir votre photo peuvent en disposer, c�est � dire l�enregistrer sur leur ordinateur ou la partager sur le r�seau.

C�est l� que McAfee Social Protection intervient. Pour acc�der aux photos, les personnes s�lectionn�es par l�utilisateur devront installer l�application et il leur sera impossible de partager, de copier, d�imprimer, ou de faire des captures d��cran de vos clich�s. Pour les personnes non autoris�es, les photos seront tout simplement flout�es.

Comment �a marche ?

L�image que vous importez sur votre profil est stock�e directement sur les serveurs de McAfee. La soci�t� peut ensuite ajouter l�ic�ne d�un cadenas en filigrane, ce qui bloque le menu du clic droit de la souris.

Et ce n�est pas tout, les photos publi�es par vos amis sur le r�seau social seront aussi pass�es au crible. Un syst�me de reconnaissance faciale vous avertira au cas o� une photo de vous non autoris�e circulerait sur un autre profil.

APPLICATION LAYER SIMULATIONS ON NS 2

A framework named "ns2-app" is developed and maintained by Xizhi Zhu to simplify the application layer simulations on NS-2.

BE CAREFUL, its only tested on NS2.33 above, but it should work on some older versions as it doesnt change any existing code.

Why this framework

NS2 supports only unreal applications that just contain the length of packets. There do exist some real applications, but they are difficult to reuse, or even restricted to a specific type of applications.
Therefore, we decide to write this framework trying to reduce the difficulty. Also, a P2P framework is to be provided based on it.

Usage

• The application layer simulation framework
1. Download the latest source code here, uncompress it into the ~/ns-2.33/ directory, and recompile NS. BE CAREFUL, it will overwrite the original Makefile. But you can also modify the Makefile yourself by adding -I./real-app to the INCLUDES section and real-app/adu.o real-app/wrapper.o real-app/real-app.o real-app/test/test.o to the OBJ_CC section.
2. Derive a class from ADU to represent the application layer data, and rewrite the size function. The packets are sent by calling the RealApplication::send() function
3. Derive a class from RealApplication to represent the application, and rewrite the recv function which is called when a packet is arrived.
4. Derive a class from TclClass to combine the application in C++ with OTcl.
5. Write an OTcl script to configure the simulation.

• The P2P application
1. Its still under development.

After downloading, untar the downloaded folder in  ~/ns-2.33 directory and recompile NS-2.

Todays application is my favorite calculator on a desktop computer (and my N900). It is called Qalculate!:

Qalculate! has all the features you expect from a calculator and has a fairly straight forward layout:

I like Qalculate! because in addition to being fairly simplistic in appearance it is also a powerful tool. Qalculate! supports creating your own functions and by default it comes with a slew of its own:

As you may note from the menu Qalculate! also comes pre-programmed with a variety of scientific variables and various unit conversions (because the US is silly and still doesnt use the metric system!).

Beyond the functionality of Qalculate! it is also a well written tool because the calculations/tasks it performs are completed separated from the GUI front end. This means Qalculate! comes with more than one front end, currently it has both GTK and QT options (and I hope to see an EFL front end some day). If you have not yet tried Qalculate! out before I highly recommend it. You should be able to easily find and install it from your distributions repositories (Bodhi users can also find it in the appcenter).
